Abstract

Ammonium is a crucial molecule for living systems. Microorganisms utilise it as direct source for the element nitrogen and in the human body, the ammonium produced from catabolism requires thorough detoxification. In both examples, highly selective and dedicated membrane proteins called ammonium transport (Amt) or Rhesus (Rh) proteins mediate the transport of the NH4+ cation across lipid bilayers.

The aim of this research project is to find Amt-like proteins that affect cell regulation and might be representatives of receptors without N1/N2 binding site.
